As our society becomes more sedentary, it is vital that we provide the proper means of exercise for teenagers. Through opportunities in Health and Physical Education classes, students need to demonstrate the ability to perform and appreciate sport and activity-specific skills. Through written evaluation, they should demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic principles of physiology, exercise, nutrition, and chemical substances on their body as well as sex education and family living.

It is important that students learn fundamental driving skills. Career opportunities related to Health and Physical Education are necessary for their career development. We must also realize that people are whole individuals that function in a physical, ecological, and social environment. Many interrelated factors have an effect on an individual’s health and in turn on the health of the community.


  • To present sufficient anatomy for the student to understand the basic structure of the body, and enough physiology to understand its functions.
  • To give the student a useful basic knowledge of organic and functional diseases.
  • To provide practical information relating to the prevention of disease.
  • To give the student basic knowledge about drugs, alcohol, and tobacco and the effects of each on a person’s life.
  • To give the student a factual course in sex education and family living.
  • To improve the student’s health and his/her attitudes toward it.
  • To attend workshops to learn innovative methods of teaching.
  • To present standardized tests to improve student’s performances in national tests such as the AAU physical fitness test.
  • To display posters and materials which are clear and understandable and relate to material being taught.
  • Meet with members of department on a regular basis to review curriculum and budget.
  • To continue good rapport with administration, teacher to teacher, teacher to student, and teacher to parent.
  • Acceptance of responsibility of personal appearance, dependability, and maintain safety procedures throughout entire program.
  • Be flexible at all times because of subject and class area.
  • The physical education course is designed to instill positive attitudes toward physical activity, to create an awareness of the value of physical activity, to help students recognize the value of good and poor physical condition, and to provide knowledge of physical activity programs to use for improving physical condition.


  • To emphasize the responsibility of each driver to make the HTS work.
  • The students will learn the procedures for starting, moving, and stopping a car.
  • The students will learn how to identify signs, signals, and roadway markings.
  • The students will learn how to identify and analyze traffic situations, predict possible outcomes, and make wise decisions for executing safe actions.
  • The students will learn judgments involving time, space, and distance related to intersections and railroad crossings.
  • Students will learn how to follow and meet traffic, use basic skills in traffic, pass, adjust to traffic patterns, and protect other roadway users.
  • The students will learn how to pass and how to be passed; how to drive in special environments, and how to interact with special purpose vehicles.
  • The students will learn about special problems encountered on expressways.
  • The students will learn key concepts regarding reduced visibility, reduced traction, and other adverse weather conditions.
  • The students will learn the physical abilities needed for safe driving, disabilities, emotions, and risk management techniques.
  • The students will learn laws governing the use of alcohol.
  • The students will learn about peer pressure, and effects peer pressure might have on their own decisions regarding drinking and driving.
